Book description: An enchanting story of a dragon that doesn’t know what it is and sets off on a journey of adventure and discovery to find out. Beautifully illustrated in Chinese watercolor, this wonderful read aloud includes information on Chinese dragons (and how they differ from what we usually think of when we think of dragons), Chinese written characters and a picture history of 13 Chinese characters that are central to the story.

Review: Truly an illustrated story that appeals because of the prose and the chracters that populate this imaginary world. Jin Jin is on a quest of self-discovery and his tale totally draws the reader in. A perfect book for reading aloud to children. Will definitely become a child’s favorite because it is written and illustrated by a sister and brother team that are obviously still young at heart and able to share imagination and wonder.

The Brothers’ Civil War (Ages 9-12)

* * * The Brothers’ War: Civil War Voices in Verse
Author: J. Patrick Lewis
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Hardcover: 48 pages
Publisher: National Geographic Children’s Books (November 27, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1426300379
ISBN-13: 978-1426300370

Book description: The wonderful wordplay of J. Patrick Lewis breathes new life into the speeches of Lincoln, the letters of Grant and Lee, and the moving human drama of our country’s Civil War. Lewis’ poignant poetry gives young readers a vivid insight into the brutal conflict that tore America apart. The author draws on primary-source books and articles to inspire each poem, bringing the ordinary and extraordinary voices of the Civil War to light. The book also includes a note from the Photo Editor on the authentic period images used throughout. Readers experience history directly as it was lived by Americans in the 1860s.

Review: I can’t think of a better way to introduce a child to history then through pictures and ‘letters,’ creating an accessible living history they can immerse themselves in and experience for themselves. Poems written from the point of the historical characters really reveals the human spirit (of both sides of the civil war) for children that is often buried under the facts, statistics and politics. A great addition to the home library.
