Book description: The perennial topic of “the potty” is a welcome and essential addition to Begin Smart’s new Level 5 for children ages 2 to 3 years.

“Where’s my potty?

I have to poo and pee.

Is it under the bed?

Look and see.”

In each story, Lily and Pete search around the house to find their potty at potty-time.  Colorful gatefolds throughout the books show how Pete and Lily learn to use their potties.  One book for boys and one book for girls make potty-time perfect!

Book review: These little books get the topic of potty time started making what might be a scary new step for little ones quite ordinary.  Great to have on hand when introducing the potty.  Lets little ones get used to the idea without making a big fuss.

Book description: Features cat, chicken, penguin and dog that engage the youngest readers with touch-and-feel elements as parents provide the appropriate sounds.

Book review: If you like Begin Smart and you don’t already have a book with tactile features about baby animals and what they say, you’ll want this one.  It’s interesting and fun for the new baby reader.  BUT, it’s not really different than any other book of the sort on the market, except that it’s Begin Smart and the construction is sturdy, the art is colorful, but the idea for this one is pretty average.

Book review: A fun book for counting backwards.  Your toddler will love reading it forward and backward.  Your baby will like the colorful ducks and the whole idea of bath time and splashing around.  The touch-and-feel elements, though, don’t stand out in this one as much as they do in other Begin Smart books, they’re hardly noticeable in comparison.

Book description: The Busy Bus by Marsha Cook is a delightful collection of poems. The poems are witty with great illustrations making it a fun book to read. This book is sure to bring smiles and giggles to young children especially when read out loud in a classroom or library. Not only is this amusing but it gently speaks of relationships with siblings & other social issues facing children. Make room for it on your library shelf. A portion of the royalties go to the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago.

Book review: Silly, sassy, funny, clever, cute.  I found more than a few of these poems became personal favorites:  “The Brat,” “Don’t You Hate it When it’s Time For Bed?” and “Big Fat Pricilla the Cat.”  A perfect way to introduce children to rhyme and get them thinking up their own silly fun.

Clap your hands and join the band as it gathers and grows from a solo performance, to an explosive full orchestra.

Book review: Lyrical prose and dancing, music-playing animals draw young readers in.  It starts with a mouse and a spoon, then a cat joins in with a tin can and a spatula, then a hen joins in, followed by a goat and several more animals until the whole barnyard comprises a band.  Kids will love the  alliteration and the growing number of animal characters as the music grows.  A great book to practice counting and reading.

Bushfire Rescue (Extreme Adventures) (Ages 9-12)

Publisher: Kane/Miller Book Publishers (January 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1935279335
ISBN-13: 978-1935279334

Book description: It’s the holidays and Sam Fox has gone to the high country to stay with his grandparents. While trying to stop cattle rustlers from stealing a stud bull, an injured Sam is isolated in the mountains during a horrific bushfire. To survive, he must rely on his courage; ingenuity, and the help of Chainsaw – a mad old rodeo bull!

Book review: Bushfire Rescue is the second book in the Extreme Adventures series, and is well, another extreme adventure for young Sam Fox.

Here’s the breakdown:

Hook/Setting: The story is like a snowball rolling down a hill, it keeps getting faster and faster. The setting is diverse and well done.

Character(s): Sam is back along with some new characters, mainly animals.  I grew attached to Sam’s horse, Susie, but there’s also an ex-rodeo bull, wild horses, kangaoroos, and a series of birds.

Events/Plot: The plot is intense and the action doesn’t end until the book does.   From falls to landslides to bushfires, it’ll be a miracle if Sam lives to be thirty.

Reader Excitability/Overall Presentation: The story is unique and as good as the first book.  I would recommend this book to Extreme Adventures fans and anyone who wants an hour of action.

Review by N.C., 15-yrs old.

Language: English
ISBN-10: 0982512031
ISBN-13: 978-0982512036

Book description: When Thomás moves away from his neighborhood and into a mobile home in his grandparents’ backyard, he misses his friends. There’s nothing to do around the apple orchard with no friends, his dad works a lot, and his little brother was hurt in an accident. All his sister wants to do is play with her dolls. Will Thomás be able to rely on God to get through the difficult times?

Book review: This is a very difficult story dealing with the age-old questions: “Why do bad things happen to good people?” and “If God is all-powerful and all-loving why does he allow bad things to happen?” Not only is there a Christian message of hope, but the warmth of family and the faith they share envelopes the main character and the reader delivering a powerful message of God’s love, providence and faithfulness. A must read especially if your kiddo/family is struggling to deal with very trying circumstances like an illness or job loss.

Publisher: Silver Dolphin Books (August 11, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1571459073
ISBN-13: 978-1571459077

Book description: The thousand compound eyes of a dragon fly, the military precision of an ant attack, the extraordinary morphing of caterpillar into butterfly — these are a few of the fantastic images featured in this book. Children get a bug’s-eye view of some of the planet’s most intriguing. Five full-page acetate pages reveal the hidden workings of different animals’ bodies, while fascinating 3-D cross-sections provide one-of-a-kind views of these animals in their environments. Stunning computer-generated illustrations bring out even the tiniest details, from the hairy legs on the jumping spider to the intricate order of a beehive. Age-appropriate text, fascinating facts, and a glossary deepen young readers’ knowledge.

Book review: I have some bug experts in the family and I can tell you that this book will thrill them to their scientific bones! With life-like illustrations capturing insects so vividly, how could the reader not fall in love with them? Bells and whistles aside (see the book description) this book teaches kids about several insects, their body parts, their amazing life cycle or habitat (for some) and even cross sections of others. I especially recommend this book for kids just getting into bugs. This will wow their socks off and really encourage their exploration of this field of study.

Language: English
ISBN-10: 1416971483
ISBN-13: 978-1416971481

Book review: Silly! Definitely a toddler-tickler that will have your tot giggling at the end. The illustrations are nostalgic-esque and remind me of both the Jetsons and the Campbell Soup kids; the books definitely have a ‘nostalgic commercial feel’ and I could just imagine product placement here–great for merchandising, right? Great colorful pages and great lovable characters. For parents that care, this book has very mild bathroom humor which is pleasing to this age group, but is also a heads up for those to whom it might matter.

Book review: An activity book for the younger set, but certainly to be enjoyed by one and all. Think of this as a guided coloring book where your imagination fills in the whys and wherefores of the story. Absolutely creative and, once again, weapon free. I love all the loose ends and fill-in-the blanks for endless hours of imaginative self-entertainment.

Big Wolf and Little Wolf, The Little Leaf that Wouldn’t Fall (Ages 4-8)

Publisher: Enchanted Lion Books (November 10, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1592700888
ISBN-13: 978-1592700882

Book description: High up in a tree is a little leaf that Little Wolf admires because it’s so tender, shiny, and soft. He asks Big Wolf to go get it. “Wait,” says Big Wolf. “Eventually it will fall.” But it doesn’t. Big Wolf finally agrees to get the leaf, but as branches crack under his feet, Little Wolf wonders whether the little leaf is worth the trouble.

Book review: The love between two friends, Big Wolf and Little Wolf, grows in this second book and is shown very touchingly in prose and illustration with a very light hand minus syrupy sweetness. Your little one with ‘get it’ and love it.

This is the second Big Wolf & Little Wolf book I have reviewed and I can’t get enough of these endearing characters. Altogether, these are the kind of books I love to read to my little one because they set a mood that just invites you to cuddle up and read in a quiet room in a comfy chair. Big Wolf and Little Wolf also remind me of a big brother-little brother relationship, so if you have that combo at home, you’ll want these books for that reason, too.

Book review: This will be your baby’s new best friend. Perfectly made to be a clutch toy. Baby will love reading along with you and bonding with his new best friend. A butterfly, a fish, a car, a flower, a bird, and much more—all for baby’s eyes to see. When baby needs to chew on something, just direct him away from the cards to the teether ring.

Book review: Now these are worthwhile for the precocious baby…and who doesn’t have one of those? Start your baby naming pictures and matching them to words while he’s teething and build that early vocabulary. Smart and useful.

Book review: This board book has all that I’ve come to expect from Begin Smart: quality construction, durability, highly colorful illustrations and an engaging educational story…but I am concerned that the peek-a-boo flaps will not last long and overall the story doesn’t stand out among other books like these for babies. There are a LOT of Begin Smart books to choose from and this one is easy to look over once you’ve been spoiled by so many others in the Begin Smart line.

He expects that a person or an object will reappear eventually—and when the anticipated finally happens, he’s delighted. This charming book, with flaps to lift and see-through die cuts, will help little ones solidify object permanence. There’s even a place for a photo so that the answer to “peek-a-boo, who?” can be a family member . . . or perhaps the reader!

Book review: Outstanding and fun! Your little one will delight in this picture book and have fun as each page unfolds and shows the surprise inside. Loved the colors, the see-through cut-outs and the surprise ending as described above. A keeper.

This one is destined to be a favorite. Little ones will love pushing the squeaky button and then look to see what happens next, page after page. A great idea!

Publisher: Calkins Creek Books (April 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1590784278
ISBN-13: 978-1590784273

Book description: Meet Benjamin Tallmadge, a young teacher in the midst of Revolutionary America. Spurred by the cry for freedom and the blood spilled at the battles of Lexington and Concord, Benjamin sacrifices his career and his dreams to enlist in George Washington’s army. Follow Benjamin and his beloved horse, Highlander, into fiery combat at the Battle of Long Island. Hear cannons blast, smell gunpowder, watch the enemy barrel forward as Benjamin must fire or die. Witness grisly war as Benjamin grapples with the realities of being a soldier, and see whether he and the rest of the battered Americans can escape from Brooklyn unscathed.

Book review: Gripping, vivid and real, but perfect for this age group (9-12) without tarnishing their innocence. Castrovilla and Farnsworth bring the reality of war and the vibrancy of history down to a level older children can grasp and will fire them up to learn about the Revolutionary War. Castrovilla weaves this tale from extensive histotical resources and provides a time line, map, and source notes that will add greatly to the study of this time period.
