+ + + + Monster Slayers
Author: Lukas Ritter
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Hardcover: 256 pages
Publisher: Mirrorstone (May 11, 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0786954841
ISBN-13: 978-0786954841
Book description: When vicious, dog-headed gnolls kidnap everyone living in the small village of Hesiod, only Evin and his fighter friend Jorick manage to escape. With help from an ancient guidebook of magical beasts called A Practical Guide to Monsters, the two boys and a new friend–elf wizard Betilivatis–must trek through ancient ruins and face one menacing monster after another in order save their families.
But Evin soon realizes that not everything is as it seems. Someone–or something–has taken leadership of the gnolls and has dangerous plans for the kidnapped villagers. Betilivatis often disappears mysteriously and has strange conversations with someone only she can see. And Evin is having unusual dreams of a place he’s never been, a place that feels more and more real with each passing day.
Book review: Monster Slayers started out as a comfortable adventure story: two young heroes that have to rescue their village; monsters; an elf. Halfway through, though, there’s a twist and after reading it I couldn’t put the book down. It was great. So while it may start off as a seemingly ordinary adventure story, Monster Slayers definitely has some surprises. I would recommend Monster Slayers to anyone who likes a good fantasy adventure or is a fan of its companion, A Practical Guide to Monsters.

+ + Begin Smart: My Little Baby
Author: Begin Smart
Board book: 12 pages
Publisher: Begin Smart LLC (March 4, 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1609060083
ISBN-13: 978-1609060084
Book description: Features cat, chicken, penguin and dog that engage the youngest readers with touch-and-feel elements as parents provide the appropriate sounds.
Book review: If you like Begin Smart and you don’t already have a book with tactile features about baby animals and what they say, you’ll want this one. It’s interesting and fun for the new baby reader. BUT, it’s not really different than any other book of the sort on the market, except that it’s Begin Smart and the construction is sturdy, the art is colorful, but the idea for this one is pretty average.

Book description: Ruby can’t understand why her cat, Mattoo, never wants to play. Ruby is good-natured but is perhaps too boisterous. Will Mattoo ever want to play with Ruby? Will Ruby ever win Mattoo’s affection?
Book review: This will strike your kiddo as humorous, especially if you own a cat. A great way to introduce little ones to cats and their temperament. Loved the illustrations and the whole concept of this noisy little girl being just a bit rambunctious with her cat. Silly, fun and a good lesson. A great read.

+ + + + Monster Fliers: From the Time of Dinosaurs
Author: Elizabeth MacLeod
Illustrator: John Bindon
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Hardcover: 32 pages
Publisher: Kids Can Press, Ltd. (February 1, 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1554531993
ISBN-13: 978-1554531998
Book description: While the dinosaurs walked the earth, pterosaurs (flying reptiles), ancient birds and other monster fliers ruled the skies. John Bindon s illustrations, created with the help of the latest fossil research, bring nineteen of these long-vanished creatures to life with startling brilliance. Some of these monster fliers were as small as a crow, others as big as a small plane.
Monster Fliers brings together the latest research in clear, engaging text and dramatic illustrations, making it a great addition to a young child s dinosaur collection. The book includes a timeline to show when these creatures lived as well as a chart indicating their relative sizes.
Book review: I gave this one four pluses because it’s all about the winged creatures which is fascinating both in narration and illustration–a must have for dinosaur lovers. Usually T-Rex and the other land dwellers rule these sorts of books, but not so with Monster Fliers. Meet every sort of winged creature there ever was and savor every detail and fact.

The Grizzly children, Zeus, Smoo, and Princess, are excited to share their family and have another brother and sister. This story is told in a very matter-of-fact and loving way making those who read it feel as welcome as the two adopted bear cubs. Perfect for families that will be bringing new cubs into their clan.

+ + + Mandie Pandie in “The Curfew”
Author/Illustrator: Samuel Vera
Publisher: Crazee Comics, November 2008
Ages: 4-8
http://www.crazeecomics.com
Book description: When a young girl named Mandie Pandie decides to stay up past her bedtime, she finds she has entered a nightmarish world. Now Mandie Pandie must escape the clutches of Witches and Goblins and get back home with her friends Bunny and Bear. Does Mandie Pandie learn a valuable lesson about having a curfew?
Book review: A great read for ages 4-8. Vera’s illustrations are laughable and quite expressive, making this page turner more silly than scary, but he gets the point across.
Here’s the breakdown:
Characters: Mandie does what we all desire: she stays up way past her bedtime.
Events/story line: But what happens next serves as a chilling, but humorous, reminder that mom and dad know best.
Illustrations: These illustrations are so expressive – the looks on Mandie and her friends’ faces! They will definitely give parents a great chuckle.
Reader relevance: 4-5 yr. olds can try out their fantasy of staying up past their bedtime in this comic.
Reader Excitability/ Overall Presentation: A little different from the other comics by Samuel Vera that I have reviewed so far, but definitely a worthwhile comic to read with your little one that will spark an interest in comics.

Publisher: Outskirts Press (October 28, 2009)
Language: English

ISBN-13: 978-1432745608
Book description: No mud equals no fun for three little pigs. Three little pigs try everything in their power to make or find mud. Along the way they learn a valuable life lesson.
Book review: This is a well thought out gem of a book for early readers especially those who are advanced and enjoy more sophisticated stories than “See Spot Run.” This unique story with some really very clever humor will quickly interest and entertain.
Here’s a breakdown:
Characters: There are three pigs along with a tick that narrates the story. All are very well thought out.
Events / Story Line: Three little pigs set out to find some mud and travel to silly (but recognizable) places on their journey; they learn a life lesson.
Illustrations: All very well done. Well thought out and executed. I really liked the unexpected perspectives.
Reader relevance: Clever, unique humor makes this story engaging and keeps this story going. I wanted to find out what happens next because the story is original and surprises. Good job.
Reader Excitability / Overall Presentation: My son (age 6) will enjoy this book. For a self-published book, this is really well done and I give a lot of credit to the author/illustrator.

Book review: Silly! Definitely a toddler-tickler that will have your tot giggling at the end. The illustrations are nostalgic-esque and remind me of both the Jetsons and the Campbell Soup kids; the books definitely have a ‘nostalgic commercial feel’ and I could just imagine product placement here–great for merchandising, right? Great colorful pages and great lovable characters. For parents that care, this book has very mild bathroom humor which is pleasing to this age group, but is also a heads up for those to whom it might matter.

* * My Name Is Henry Bibb: A Story of Slavery and Freedom
Author: Afua Cooper
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Hardcover: 160 pages
Publisher: Kids Can Press (September 1, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 155337813X
ISBN-13: 978-1553378136
Book description: Often shocking, always compelling, Afua Cooper’s novel is based on the life of Henry Bibb, an American slave who after repeated attempts escaped in 1841 to become an anti-slavery speaker, author and founder of a Black newspaper. Cooper takes painstakingly researched details about slavery and weaves an intimate story of Bibb’s young life, which is overshadowed by inconceivable brutality. At nine years old, Henry is separated from his mother and brothers and hired out, suffering abuse at the hands of cruel masters so severe he almost dies. Henry’s courageous life is described in intimate detail and young readers will learn about everyday slave life on a plantation and in towns and cities, the coded language of slave escapes and the dangerous routes over land and water to safe houses. As Henry Bibb moves from boyhood to manhood, he knows that one day he will “fly away” as in the old legend of the Africans who flew away to freedom. The first-person narrative, convincingly told in Henry’s voice, traces Bibb’s boyhood, marriage, fatherhood and the developing awareness of his bondage and his determination to break free of it or die.
Book review: This is a sad but compelling story with a somewhat happy ending. I found it to be very inspiring and I loved that it’s all based on true accounts. I recommend this to people interested in American history, slavery and anything historical. I tend to be a huge fan of fantasy and science fiction, but this novel really drew me in and I enjoyed it. ~ R.C., 15 yrs old.

Book review: I give this book three stars not because it’s darling and makes you say “Awwww!” (it does!) but because it demonstrates so beautifully something moms try to teach their kiddos – that they are unique and wonderful just as they are. The author dedicates this book to two little girls that wished to be twins and I couldn’t help but think of my own daughters who are twins. This is just the sort of book I would have been pleased to read to them when they were younger because it encourages kiddos to discover who they are – whether or not the look like anybody else they know.

Both girls love horses, and they’re thrilled to meet their grandparents’ herd of Spanish Barbs who roam freely on the 3,000-acre ranch. Soon, however, the girls encounter more adventure than they bargained for.
When their grandfather’s stallion is badly injured and the rest of his herd disappears, the twins try to find the missing horses and get to the bottom of the mystery. Along the way, the girls encounter rattlesnakes, good-looking cowhands and an interesting cast of characters who work at the ritzy local spa. Throughout their adventure, the twins come to terms with the fact that they are separate individuals with different paths to follow.
About the Wild Horse Creek series:
When horses are at the heart of a series, it’s pretty much guaranteed that every book will also feature fun, adventure and friendship. This series follows twins Sophie and Liv adventures on their grandfather’s ranch.
Book review: Sharon Siamon wastes no time drawing the reader right in to Liv And Sophie’s world. A fast-paced, gripping read I couldn’t put down. Horse lovers, tweens and teens will love this one and want more…and as a mother of twins, I have a special appreciation for Liv and Sophie’s relationship and growing autonomy. Well done. Siamon really knows her audience.

* * * Penny & Rio: The Mysterious Backyard Meeting
Author: Jennifer Swanson
Illustrators: Rosita Schandy & Neal Wooten
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Paperback: 44 pages
Publisher: Mirror Publishing (December 16, 2008)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0982256019
ISBN-13: 978-0982256015
Book description: Penny and Rio are two dogs who are complete opposites. Penny is curious and always on the go, while Rio prefers a good nap. At their new house, Penny discovers that their backyard is the meeting place for several different animals. Penny doesn’t know why a cat, a groundhog, a squirrel, and an owl could possibly be meeting, but she knows she has to find out. She comes up with an ingenious plan for spying on them and discovers their plot. She has to stop them – but can she get her sister dog, Rio, to help her or will Rio decide that sleep is more important? Follow along as these two pet detectives, Penny and Rio solve the first of many cases in Penny and Rio: The Mysterious Backyard Meeting.
Book review: Lol! This is a great book. Penny steals the show and Rio is the winning ’straight man.’ Not just a book about dogs with human characteristics – not at all. You can honestly tell these two dogs (real characters at that) really did behave this way and the story hooks you right in with both dogs’ unique characterizations. We are a pet family here and I know my son is going to love, love, love this because our pets have such endearing personalities, too. We can relate! Great job.
This book is geared for readers aged 9-12, but younger listeners will love having Penny & Rio’s adventures read to them as well.
