+ + + + The Tooth
Author: Avi Slodovnick
Illustrator: Manon Gauthier
Reading level: Ages 4-8
Library Binding: 32 pages
Publisher: Kane/Miller Book Publishers (September 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1935279726
ISBN-13: 978-1935279723
Book description: Marissa loves candy–maybe a little too much. When she wakes up with a toothache, her mother takes her to the dentist. And so begins a day that Marissa will never forget.
It’s a trip-to-the-dentist story about so much more than brushing your teeth.
Book review: This is an eye-opening book that grabs the reader by the heart. I love the perspective and the natural way something as serious as homelessness is slipped into an otherwise standard trip-to-the-dentist story. But you never feel like the author couldn’t choose her subject. From the point of view of little Marissa, we see what’s really important. This book could start a dialogue between you and your young child about the less fortunate and how to help. I found this book to be a pleasant and refreshing surprise that can pack a wallop of a reminder for grown-ups about what is most important. You’ll love the artwork, how the crowd is painted in drab gray and the homeless man is in color (when usually we see the world the opposite way, with the homeless almost invisible). I highly recommend this one.

+ + + Ten on The Sled
Author: Kim Norman
Illustrator: Liza Woodruff
Reading level: Ages 4-8
Hardcover: 24 pages
Publisher: Sterling (October 5, 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1402770766
ISBN-13: 978-1402770760
Book description: In the land of the midnight sun, all the animals are having fun speeding down the hill on Caribou’s sled. But as they go faster and faster, Seal, Hare, Walrus, and the others all fall off…until just Caribou’s left, only and lonely. Now, a reindeer likes flying-but never alone, so…one through ten, all leap on again!
Book review: This one is lots of fun especially if you sing along (to the tune of “Ten on the Bed”). Each animal is a surprise as he hops, whirls, flips or bails out of the sled as it roars down the hill. This will appeal to the younger crowd obviously, but older kiddos will enjoy reading this to little siblings. Loved the illustrations and each character as he makes his way off the sled. You will, too.

+ + + There’s An Alien in My Toilet Bowl
Author: Samuel Vera
Paperback: 175 pages
Publisher: Crazee Comics (June 15, 2008)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0615182828
ISBN-13: 978-0615182827
Book description: The most advanced, superior mind in the Universe is on a mission to Earth. His goal is to determine if we are a threat to his homeworld “Uranus”. Is Earth prepared for Captain Doodie or has he underestimated our simple race? He certainly never expected to meet Herman the chihuahua. Or the turtle, the squirrels, wolves, snakes, government operatives… Boy is he in for a wild ride…
Book review: So this is the first volume of a series. It’s not bad; it’s more of a book for those with a crude sense of humor. Not really my style, but I still found parts amusing and a couple actually made me laugh out loud. While I may not become a fan, I strongly suspect my two little brothers (ages 12 and 6) will love it.

Book Description: Andrea is a princess who does not enjoy being one. She dreams of being a knight but she is forced to learn to be a lady like her older sisters. Her life is filled with talk of succession, marriage, and spite and kindness from her sisters. Just when her country is on the brink of war, Andrea stumbles upon an alternative world where she learns strange new things. A world called Earth. Andrea is forced to make decisions that will either save or doom her world, not to mention ours.
Book Review: This book gives you an interesting perspective on what Earth looks like to an outsider and how we sometimes take things for granted. Andrea is a headstrong and curious young lady who keeps the story moving forward.

Book description:
Make sure that your heart
Isn’t too well-defended.
Your heart is designed
To be broken and mended.
~The Heart
These quietly beautiful and surprisingly humorous four-line poems reveal the many aspects of first love the longing, the frustration and the joy. The poet writes not from a single point of view but instead embraces the duality of first love, alternating between the perspectives of a boy and a girl. The poems and revealing illustrations by Julie Morstad combine to inspire young readers to think … and think again.
Book review: Like a journey to the past, Think Again brought me right back to the doorstep of my first love. Serious, humorous, ironic, tenderly painful and painfully tender, Think Again perfectly captures love, depression, self-discovery and the earnest yearning and angst of youth with all its quirks, intelligence and idealism. The illustrations by Julie Morstad are perfectly married to each little poem, artfully setting the mood for this little book of poetry.

* The Astonishing Journey of Teddy Bodain
Author: Melissa Forney
Illustrator: Dave Olson
Hardcover
Publisher: Buttery Moon Multimedia, Inc. (2009)
ISBN-10: 0979009456
ISBN-13: 978-0979009457′
Book description: Told through 130 letters to her best friend, Martha, each of which includes memorable characters and original, historically accurate illustrations, The Astonishing Journey of Teddy Bodain is an engaging, adventure-filled novel for the intermediate reader. A classic-in-the-making, Teddy’s story takes her through the ravages of a yellow fever outbreak, to the Ringling Circus, to the backwoods of primitive Florida-hundreds of miles away to the promise of land-down below Lake Okeechobee.
Book review: An interesting tale about a young girl who is traveling to Florida with her family in a wagon train. Teddy Bodain is smart tomboy who is curious about life and optimistic.
Recommended for younger children (10 yrs) and for people interested in historical fiction. If you like Little House on The Prairie, you’ll like this one. The illustrations were a nice touch.

* * * Too Too Many Tutus
Author: Suzanne Davis Marion
Illustrator: Marj Hales
Paperback: 32 pages
Publisher: BookSurge Publishing (February 24, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1439218471
ISBN-13: 978-1439218471
Book description: Christina has a problem. Her ballet class is coming up, and she must decide which one of her many tutus to wear. She lays them all carefully on her bed to help her decide. The decision is difficult, because the colors are each so vibrant and lovely. She imagines herself inspired to dance in a unique and special way in each tutu, with each color evoking its own particular imagery. In her blue tutu she could dance by the sea, with the birds and fishes joining in. In her green tutu she could do a forest dance among the trees, and in the meadows. Her orange tutu creates images of a joyous dance in the firelight at sunset. There are other colors too, each suggesting its own special mood. At last she receives some wise counsel in solving her dilemma, and helping her to make the correct choice.
Book review: Wonderful! Colorful, vibrant and imaginative. Your young reader (daughter, most definitely) will love the many colors and feelings the story evokes as she imagines with Christina what it would be like to wear each tutu. I loved the watercolor illustrations. The story and pictures are a great marriage for this book. Loved it.
